Inflammatory bowel disease
Inflammatory bowel disease refers to a group of lifelong diseases affecting the intestines. The main types of inflammatory bowel disease are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition resulting in inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. While it can affect any part of the GI tract, it most commonly affects the end of the small bowel and the beginning of the colon. Ulcerative colitis causes chronic inflammation and ulcers on the inner lining of the large intestine. Symptoms can vary by individual but may include abdominal pain, passing blood in the stool or diarrhea. Medicine, along with diet and nutrition, are typically used to treat ulcerative colitis.
