The medical landscape surrounding the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine continues to evolve rapidly, making it one of the most talked about topics in the industry.

In this episode of the Pharmacy Friends podcast, “Navigating the RSV vaccine frontier,” join Maryam Tabatabai, PharmD, a clinical information expert at Prime/Magellan Rx, as she talks about the new frontier of RSV monoclonal antibodies and vaccines with Scott Roberts, MD, an infectious disease expert from Yale University, who is navigating RSV season both professionally and personally.

“RSV certainly does impact the adult population and I think we’re learning more about this over time as we understand the burden of disease at the extremes of age,” Roberts says. “Age is certainly one of the biggest risk factors for having a bad outcome after an RSV infection, although there’s many other preexisting conditions that can put patients at high risk, and that includes, you know, immunocompromised status or a low immune system for any reason or preexisting pulmonary disease.”

In this episode, these thought leaders discuss why RSV is a current hot topic in the health care industry and how it’s impacting both health care systems and patients who choose to get the vaccine. Listen to their discussion covering the CDC guidance on obtaining access, the impact and risk factors of the illness and vaccines in both pediatric and adult populations, along with some conversation about how RSV monoclonal antibodies and vaccines can be administered.

“The data we have now show that it is safe to the RSV vaccine with the flu vaccine with the COVID vaccine or even all three at the same time…It is safe to be given at the same time, but if anybody’s worried, it is also OK to space these out by two weeks, and that’s also more than OK,” Roberts says.

Pharmacy Friends is a podcast dedicated to bringing industry experts to the same table to talk about what is happening in pharmacy today, what is coming, and most importantly, what it means to you.
