Prime Therapeutics recognizes Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week

March 9–15 aims to raise awareness about the chronic autoimmune disease and support the ongoing quest for a cure

National Multiple Sclerosis Society

Approximately 1 million Americans live with multiple sclerosis (MS) every day, including Marissa Grams, a senior provider relations analyst at Prime Therapeutics (Prime).

In 2021, Grams was experiencing face numbness, double vision and balance issues. Her sister had been diagnosed with MS in 2016, so she was already aware thesewere potential symptoms of the disease. After a visit to the emergency room, her doctor confirmed the news — she had MS. The diagnosis left her shell-shocked.

“When I found out, it was like time had stopped,” Grams said. “It’s kind of like the movies, where it’s surreal. I was worried that I would not be myself again, that I would let down my family and friends.”

“It's a life-changing thing,” she added. “Even if it's a slight difference in your life, it’s still a difference. It’s something that I’ve grieved and have had to come to terms with. You just have to remember that MS doesn't define you. I still have good days. I’ve learned to slow down, be more patient and know my limits.”

This includes being planful to ensure she’s managing her energy levels — whether that’s taking shorter walks, staying home rather than going out with friends or even just finding the closest parking spot at the grocery store.

Grams shared that her support system has been amazing, even if they don’t fully understand what she’s going through. Without that support system, her diagnosis would be even more difficult.

Because community has been so important, Grams has participated in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s walks for the last 10 years, which offers the opportunity to gather and show support for a cure. She has also valued speaking to others impacted by the disease and learning more about treatment and support options.

Grams will be among a number of Prime employees to walk at the upcoming MS Society Walk in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 4. MS Society has been one of Prime’s charity partners since 2012 — and Prime is committed to doing its part to help find a cure. During the company’s 2024 Week of Service, Prime raised nearly $10,000 for the organization.

“Raising awareness about MS is crucial for finding a cure and supporting those affected,” Grams said. “My hope is that soon, no other family will be impacted by this disease.”

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

MS is a disease that affects the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Because this system controls everything we do, it can be very challenging to live with the disease. MS disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body, which can cause symptoms such as numbness, weakness, trouble walking, vision changes and other challenges. Learn more at NationalMSSociety.org.
