AMCP Nexus 2024 in focus: Managed care expert shares what’s next for retiring professionals
Prime's Madhavi Manduru-Rao presents “Navigating the Final Chapter: What’s Next for Your Managed Care Pharmacy Career Journey – Opportunity for Rewirement vs. Retirement”

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) is focused on supporting the next generation of managed care pharmacy professionals with robust resident/student programs. But what about those who are looking to retire? What’s next for them?
That was the focus of an AMCP Nexus session, “Navigating the Final Chapter: What’s Next for Your Managed Care Pharmacy Career Journey – Opportunity for Rewirement vs. Retirement.”
I (Alex Cook, part of Prime’s newsroom team) was honored to connect with Madhavi Manduru-Rao, PharmD, director of clinical effectiveness and operations at Prime Therapeutics (Prime), to learn more.
Alex Cook: When I saw this session on the agenda for AMCP Nexus, I was intrigued because it’s a topic that stands out from the typical material presented at the event, which largely focuses on research. What inspired you to create and present on this topic?
Madhavi Manduru-Rao: This session was developed as a result of identifying an opportunity at AMCP. Through my involvement at AMCP and the Carolinas Affiliate, I have met many individuals who wanted to connect with retirees who are active in managed care pharmacy. I also met retirees who are still very active and are willing to share their journey with others navigating the retirement path.
What has been the response from your peers on this session?
We received positive feedback from the audience. Valuable information was shared, and they are looking forward to having more networking opportunities to learn from individuals who are still contributing to managed care pharmacy in their retirement years.
Do you see a lot of stigma around conversations about retirement in this industry?
Retirement does not have to be the end of one’s career. Often people struggle with how to stay active and contribute to society. Strategic planning is required — not just for the financial aspect but also for the physical and mental health aspects. We have so many resources for students launching their career but not many resources for winding down one’s career. I have met many individuals who are passionate about contributing to managed care pharmacy during their retirement years but don’t know how to accomplish that goal.
Explain a bit about the idea of “rewirement vs. retirement.”
Rewirement is the next phase in life that combines work, leisure and personal growth. It is an opportunity to pursue goals (fulfillment, accomplishment, happiness, etc.) through a strategic approach.
As you consider what may be the next chapter in your work, what are some of the ways you intend to “rewire” your managed care pharmacy career?
My goal is to continue to contribute to managed care pharmacy for many years. I love the work I do. I will continue to network because there is always something new to learn, and you never know when that next new connection will inspire a wonderful idea that can be incorporated into one’s work.
